Do I need a showerhead filter?

I have a confession. I’ve been preaching about the necessity for a showerhead water filter for a few years now, but I didn’t have one. It’s like the dentist that doesn’t floss his teeth. So embarrasing!

What was stopping me from installing one? The trip to the store and the installation seemed sooooooo hard. It was going to take forever, right?

Well, not really.

It took me about a 20 minute trip to Home Depot (Amazon is even faster, ya?) 2 minutes on YouTube for installation visuals, and 5 minutes (tops) to install. It will take me longer to write this blog post, but that’s how much I love ya.

I’m gonna break it down real quick here for you on why you need a showerhead water filter, which one to buy, and how to install it.

Do I really need one?

If you are prone to dry hair and skin, or are blonde then 100% yes! If you battle frizzy or curly hair, and have breakouts, or occasional skin issues like eczema, than it’s a good deal for you, too.

If you have a whole house water softener and filter system, you don’t need it. However, I am home renter, and love this as an affordable option to have the best shower water possible.

What it does.

I purchased the only one available for at my local Home Depot. Priced at under $20, Sprite Showers is the make with a replaceable six month filter that advertised it was essential for “softer hair and skin.”

The product information explains why it is essential:

“Natural oils produced by the scalp protect hair from daily wear and damage. Showering in chlorinated water, a chemical prevalent in water supplies, can strip the oil from the hair causing it to frizz and become brittle. Washing hair in filtered water helps to protect and restore its natural luster resulting in improved body and shine.

  • prevent dry and brittle hair

  • protect color treated hair

  • restore body and shine

  • removes chlorine, dirt and odors

“Chlorine can also strip away the skin’s protective oils causing it to dry and crack, leading to premature signs of aging. Protect your skin and feel refreshed by showering in filtered water.

  • protect skin’s natural oils

  • prevent dry skin and wrinkling

  • for softer, smoother skin.”

This all sounded great to me, so I headed home to test out the goods!

Read to end of this and I’ll let ya know if it worked for me.

What about bath water?

If you have a little one at home, or soaking in a bath is part of your self-care routine. Check out this bathtub water purifier. It beats trying to fill a bathtub with shower water (I’ll admit I attempted this several times and it’s not efficient AT ALL).

Proof is in the Pudding.

After a few months, I have a few solid observations to share with you. Overall, I’m pleased with the results and it was absolutely worth the little bit of time and money to add this to our shower ritual.

  • My hair is less frizzy. This one shocked me a bit! Previously I was in the habit of using a curling iron to style my wavy hair in order for it to look less frizzy. Now I’m often air-drying my hair, and polishing it with a styling product instead for a more natural look.

  • My skin is less dry. Before we installed the filter, I absolutely had to lotion my entire body after every shower. Otherwise, my skin felt itchy and dry as dust. Now I lotion 2-3 times a week instead of 1-2 times a day. Big change here!

  • His blonde is better. My hubby has bleached blonde hair. Before the filter it would turn funky colors, and look dingy and dull. Now it stays more true to the tone we want. Big win for all of you who have highlights or light hair.
